If you get a legal name change, does it wipe out info for public records searches and the like?

Not these days – IMHO.
Terrorism makes such a tactic too easy.
We are stuck with who are, though we can always call ourselves Rose, Sweet or what-we-will.
Who we were… is who we were.
I’m guessing what makes it a legal name change from an illegal name change is that you contact the government (not sure if it’d be state or country) so they can update all your records and things like that.
So probably not.
your new and old name will be in one file, even after you past away.
